LOS ANGELES Postcard Set
DID YOU KNOW?
GRAUMAN'S CHINESE THEATRE
There are nearly 200 handprints, footprints, and autographs in the Forecourt of the Stars at the Chinese Theatre. The most popular handprint to visit is Marilyn Monroe. If you look closely, you'll see her handprints are darker than anyone else's. That's because so many people have placed their hands there.
In 2002, the observatory closed for a $93 million renovation and a major expansion of exhibit space. It reopened to the public in November 2006. The observatory's grounds, exhibits, and telescopes are open and free to the public.
The building’s 90-foot rooftop spire, which resembles the needle on a phonograph, is topped by a red light that continuously blinks the word “Hollywood” in Morse code.
DISNEY CONCERT HALL
Everyone thinks that Disney Hall is just Gehry ripping off his design for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. But the design for Disney Hall came first. Gehry was selected in 1988, and his design was announced in 1991. Due to funding constraints, however, construction didn't start until 1999. Meanwhile, Bilbao was completed in 1997.
LAX - THEME BUILDING
The building was influenced by the “Googie” and “Popluxe” design schools and part of the Los Angeles Jet Age Terminal Construction Project. The original design, intended as the main ticketing area for the airport, with a large glass dome that linked to the terminals, never came to fruition. The observatory desk can be accessed for free on the weekends.
